Egypt allows relief aid into Gaza

Mar 4, 2008, 12:03 GMT

Cairo - Egypt allowed Tuesday convoys carrying humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip while five Palestinians succumbed to their wounds in Egyptian hospitals, local sources said.

Egypt opened the Rafah border crossing for aid convoys belonging to the Egyptian doctors' union, said Hosam al-Shorbagi, head of the union's relief committee in al-Arish.

On Sunday, Egypt opened its border with the Gaza Strip to receive wounded Palestinians, a day after 54 people were killed in an Israeli operation in response to rocket attacks from the territory.

Five Palestinians died of wounds in Egyptian hospitals, al-Arish hospital director, Sami Anwar, said.

Some 58 wounded Palestinians have been received since Sunday, many of whom have been transferred to hospitals in Cairo and Ismailia while 22 are receiving treatment in the border town of al-Arish, Anwar said.

The radical Islamic Hamas movement issued an angry statement blaming Egypt for the deaths, charging Cairo had failed to transfer them to better-equipped hospitals in the capital.
