Jordan's king meets McCain, stresses "effective" US Mideast role
Mar 18, 2008, 13:31 GMT
Amman - King Abdullah II of Jordan conferred Tuesday with the Republican nominee-in-waiting for US presidential elections, Senator John McCain of Arizona, and urged Washington to play an 'effective' role in the Middle East peace process, according to an official statement.
King Abdullah warned against 'failure' of the peace process, saying that a successful conclusion of the ongoing peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority would provide 'a clue to resolving other conflicts in the region.'
McCain, who flew in from Iraq, was due to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories later this week in the course of a fact- finding mission.
Also attending the meeting with the king were Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.
'The senators briefed the monarch on the political and security situations in Iraq,' the royal court statement said.
