Turkish artillery units shell northern Iraq
Apr 27, 2008, 13:21 GMT
Baghdad - Turkish artillery units shelled Sunday villages in Iraq's northern Kurdish Autonomous Region for the third successive day, Kurdish sources say.
'Turkish artillery shelled once more villages in Zakho on the border with Turkey under the pretext of seeking out members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK),' the sources said. No damage was caused by the shelling, which lasted nearly an hour.
Turkish warplanes and artillery have bombed rebel positions over the past two days in the regions of Zap, Avasin-Basyan and Hakurk on the border with northern Iraq, the Turkish military said Saturday.
In the past months, Turkey has launched aerial operations targeting separatists PKK rebels, who are operating from the rugged mountains of northern Iraq.
Ankara launched a ground offensive in the area in February to uproot Kurdish rebels, who have been fighting for self-rule for Kurdish areas in south-east Turkey.
