Hamas ministry to censor Internet sites in Gaza
May 18, 2008, 20:55 GMT
Gaza - The Hamas-run Telecommunications Ministry will start blocking websites deemed unfit according to Islamic rules, an official said Sunday.
This was made possible after a deal was struck with the Palestinian telecommunications company, said Ihab al-Hussain, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry in Gaza, adding that the plan went into effect last week.
It is not yet known which sites have been blocked.
The Islamic Hamas movement took over the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after routing forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of the more secular Fatah party.
