Gaza City - An Israeli strike on a UN-school in northern Gaza killed at least 42 Palestinian civilians in the deadliest single incident since Israel launched its offensive in the Strip 11 days ago, health officials said.

Gaza emergency services chief Mo'aweya Hassanein told reporters dozens more were injured in the strike on the al-Fakhoura school in the Jabaliya refugee camp, north of Gaza City.

UNWRA Spokesman Chris Gunness said he was unable to immediately give details he was unable to reach his own staff in Gaza.

Hassanein was unable to say whether a tank shell or a missile hit the school, but several Israeli army tanks are stationed some three kilometers east and north of the camp, on its outskirts.

Heavy fighting has been taking place between local militants and the Israeli ground troops stationed on the outskirts, with the tanks shelling in the directions from where Palestinian gunmen have been firing anti-tank missiles and mortar shells at the troops.

Israel F16 fighter jets have also been covering the ground troops, firing at the locations from which militants have been firing at the Israeli soldiers.

Witnesses said it was Israeli fighter jets which struck the UN school, adding the strike came shortly after Palestinian militants fired mortar shells from an area near the school at the Israeli forces stationed north of the camp.

An Israeli military spokesman said he was checking the reports.

Hassanein said the death toll in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli air and ground offensive on December 27 now topped 600, while over 2,600 have been wounded.

Nothing is wrong with it. Incinerating innocent school children is good. The U.S. did such things all the time during the Vietnam war, and other wars.

But, hypocrisy is bad.

Without the shield of hypocrisy christians are no better than their enemies.

Many of these 'innocent' civilians would have voted for a terrorist organisation to gain power in Gaza [56%]. Many of the children could grow up to be Hamas fighters and many of the mothers would have bourne terrorists so exactly how many of the citizens of Gaza are 'innocent' ?
I suppose the Islamic bombings in London and Madrid, targeting the West were not innocent victims or does Islam have double standards when it comes to the death of innocent people?

Israel won't quit until they're all dead. They've turned Gaza into a concentration camp for a final solution. Anything coming out of Israel is propaganda. Here's a clip from A major US newspaper.

'A study about to be published in Israel by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, an independent research group that has close ties to the Israeli military establishment and is supported by the American Jewish Congress, presents Hamas as having methodically built its military infrastructure in the heart of population centers.'

Independent, but has close ties to and is supported(financially and otherwise) by the Israeli military and the AJC. Independent????? Yeah, Right. That lie is on the same level as saying The CIA is a Bible study group. Zionism = Nazism.

Its amazing to watch the indignation coming out from Europe.

First they support the total embargo on Gaza after Hamas won the popular election in order to overturn the election results. The barbaric act of collective punishment, creating the greatest ghetto since WWII.

Then they support the PLOs attempt to overthrow the Hamas by force.

That left Gaza population no choice but support the rocket fire against Israel in order to break process of slow death.

Now, as Israel predictably responds (and at this point it has no other choice), the Europe suddenly voices 'concern' over civilian population.

Europe always was and still is the greatest whorehouse on a Planet.

'He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.' John 3:36

Christians and jesus deny muslims entrance into eternal life. They hold the keys to heaven. Instead, christians and their jesus tortures muslims for eternity with the wrath of god.

No wonder muslims and christians keep killing themselves in a bloodletting frenzy century after century after century.

Such condescending beliefs, such hostility against other people. It is bound to produce violence.

We did not put them mass produced newly made up Jews there for free, they have to work for the money and resources we send them and be useful, and now they have a chance to prove to us that they can be our mercenary army in the region and be reliable, and not make us look like fools for trusting them.

To a christian, heaven is a gated community where muslims are not allowed in.

Israeli MurderersJan 7th, 2009 - 09:47:08

Have we forgotten the 17,500 dead – almost all civilians, most of them children and women – in Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon; the 1,700 Palestinian civilian dead in the Sabra-Chatila massacre; the 1996 Qana massacre of 106 Lebanese civilian refugees, more than half of them children, at a UN base; the massacre of the Marwahin refugees who were ordered from their homes by the Israelis in 2006 then slaughtered by an Israeli helicopter crew; the 1,000 dead of that same 2006 bombardment and Lebanese invasion, almost all of them civilians?

What is amazing is that so many Western leaders, so many presidents and prime ministers and, I fear, so many editors and journalists, bought the old lie; that Israelis take such great care to avoid civilian casualties. 'Israel makes every possible effort to avoid civilian casualties,' yet another Israeli ambassador said only hours before the Gaza massacre. And every president and prime minister who repeated this mendacity as an excuse to avoid a ceasefire has the blood of last night's butchery on their hands. Had George Bush had the courage to demand an immediate ceasefire 48 hours earlier, those 40 civilians, the old and the women and children, would be alive.

Yes, Israelis deserve security. Twenty Israelis dead in 10 years around Gaza is a grim figure indeed. But 600 Palestinians dead in just over a week, thousands over the years since 1948 – when the Israeli massacre at Deir Yassin helped to kick-start the flight of Palestinians from that part of Palestine that was to become Israel – is on a quite different scale. This recalls not a normal Middle East bloodletting but an atrocity on the level of the Balkan wars of the 1990s. And of course, when an Arab bestirs himself with unrestrained fury and takes out his incendiary, blind anger on the West, we will say it has nothing to do with us. Why do they hate us, we will ask? But let us not say we do not know the answer.

with all the respect to you all readers and comment writers!

It's very easy and comfortable to you all to sit in you're safe home in the safe UK and in the safe Europe!
I assume that 99.999% of people here who write their 'smart' and 'self-righteous' opinions do not have a clue what it feels like living in the Israeli daily routine in the past almost 9 years.
Non of you spend a day with at least 3 danger alarms that call to find a hidden place
From the rocket that were lobbed 2 minutes ago from Gaze in the courtesy of Hamas (no, for no reason at all). And I'm not talking about the past 2 weeks, but the past 8 years.!!
And this has been going on for the last 8 (!!) years with Israel not reacting and not attacking, just taking the diplomatic way and trying to negotiate with the help of the US and the UN.
Not only this, 4 years ago, Israel had to make a very painful and controversial step in order to 'make peace with the so called neighbors' and had to disengaged its settlements from the gaza covered strip – just to make an effort for some peace and quiet. Hamas in return, saw this opportunity not see sense, or maybe behave less animally- no! They jump on the opportunity and placed their rockets launcher in this these abandoned area which obviously is closer to Israel!

So next time you people read or see about this conflict and about this war from your secure home in the UK – just remember that it's so easy to criticize the others… especially when NON of you has a slight idea of what's going on there…
After all, it so comfi sitting in the chair in front of the telly or the laptop in our living room and not our bomb shelter…

Let's all wish for better times…

'do not have a clue what it feels like living in the Israeli daily routine in the past almost 9 years.'

You are wrong.

The same thing happens in the U.S. Simply live in a ghetto with crime and choose to live with it and the potential for your kid to get shot in the head by gang violence, or move out to somewhere safe.

The typical U.S. citizen is a lazy bum and instead of getting off their duff to move they simply stay put and watch T.V. and every so often one of their kid gets popped off by a crack addict. There are 50 (known and verified) murders in the U.S. every day. Who knows how many actual murders there are.

I have known people who choose to move and those who choose not to move. Every so often the ones that choose not to move pay for their decision. We all have to make our own choices.

Obviously your kid has never been shot in the head while in a public school in the United States.

Why do you think Obama will not send his kids to a public school in D.C.?

Have you every seen those schools? If he did it would be tantamount to murdering his own kids. Obama does not care about OTHER people's kids. He simply makes his decision to keep his kids the hell out of the public system for obvious reasons. He doesn't try to fix the public school system, he simply gets his kids the hell out and keeps them away.

You Israelis think you have it bad and you are whimpering that you need to kill muslims to exist. Grow up and solve your own damn problems.
