Middle East peace players head to Brussels (1st Lead)
Mar 15, 2009, 19:12 GMT
Brussels - Some of the main players in the troubled Middle East peace process headed to Brussels Sunday evening for talks with European Union leaders, amidst ongoing efforts to heal the breach between the two main Palestinian factions.
'We will see when we get together what new ideas we will have,' Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, who called the meeting as current holder of the EU's rotating presidency, said as he arrived at the talks.
His guest, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said that he expected 'further cooperation and coordination between Egypt and the EU' from the meeting.
The talks come as the secular Palestinian party Fatah and its bitter Islamist rival, Hamas, are negotiating over forming a unity government, nearly two years after Hamas wrested control of the Gaza Strip from Fatah in an outburst of bloody factional infighting.
Those talks 'are making progress,' but much will depend on the reactions of party leaders in the West Bank and Gaza Strip once their negotiators return home, Aboul Gheit said.
The EU's top diplomat, Javier Solana, rejected reports that the talks were deadlocked, saying, 'They will continue talking, they will continue putting ideas on the table and I hope very much they will move forward. It is not the end today.'
The officials were joined at the meeting by Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki, Jordan's ambassador to the EU, Ahmad Masa'deh, and EU Foreign Affairs Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
The EU views Hamas as a terrorist organization and refuses to deal with it directly, instead supporting Egypt in its mediation.
The 27-member bloc 'has all confidence in (Egyptian) President Mubarak and the people who are leading these discussions,' Solana said.
On Tuesday, Fatah and Hamas began peace talks in Cairo aimed at forming a reconciliation government.
On Sunday, Israel launched a push to bargain the release of captured soldier Gilad Shalit with a proposed prisoner exchange. Galit was captured in June 2006 by militant Palestinians under Hamas command in the Gaza Strip.
Aboul Gheit said that he expected clarity on that issue on Monday.
'The Palestinians made an offer, the Israelis responded by another offer. I think by tomorrow things will be clearer,' he said.

Does everybody know that we have every reason to believe we are now less than 16 months from the Great Tribulation? Javier Solana, the head of EU Foreign Policy, successfully established the 7 year European Neighborhood Policy as of Jan 1, 2007. Interestingly, he receives authority and crisis powers through Article 666 and Recommendation 666. He further rose to power out of 10 nations that are tied together through Article 5 of the Modified Brussels treaty. Furthermore he is pushing Israel into “peace” by the two state solution.
At the same time we have the nations of the world represented by the Quartet, Diplomatic Quartet, or Madrid Quartet that is using its collective power to manipulate Israel into dividing the land of Israel. The Quartet is made up of the EU, US, Russia, and the UN. Javier Solana is representative for the EU. This Quartet looks very much like what Zechariah foretold in Zech 1:18-23. The Quartet will be successful in scattering Israelis from Jerusalem as it is written.
At the same time, we have the ground work established for Ezekiel 38 and 39, or a Russian led invasion of Israel with Iran and other countries of similar faith.
You can read about these things in more detail from two pamphlets I came across on BorntoWatch.
