Iran's foreign minister studying Obama's message (Extra)
Mar 20, 2009, 20:22 GMT
Tehran - In a first official reaction, Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki late Friday said he was studying an offer by US President Barack Obama to open a new era in relations and put old divisions aside.
In a video message to Iran on Nowruz, which is Iranian New Year, Obama early Friday offered a new beginning, saying the United States was committed to engagement, not threats, in its pursuit of diplomacy.
Mottaki showed a cool reaction.
'It is nice that Nowruz is used as an occasion for messages of peace and friendship - but as far as other aspects (in the message) are concerned, they are under evaluation,' Mottaki said in comments carried by the official news agency Irna.
Observers expected that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will make a clear comment on the Obama message on Saturday, in his annual Persian Nowruz speech in the religious city of Mashad in north-eastern Iran.
Khamenei, in line with the constitution, has the final say on all state affairs.
Obama made the remarks in a broadcast with Farsi subtitles by Voice of America's Persian News Network, which is widely viewed by satellite in Iran.
Earlier Friday, presidential press advisor, Ali-Akbar Javanfekr, who holds no official position, reacted coolly to the offer and reiterated the stance of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the US should change its policies in practice before approaching Iran after three decades of diplomatic estrangement.
On a separate issue, Mottaki indicated that Iran would attend the Afghanistan conference March 31 in The Hague.
'Iran has constantly played a positive and constructive role in aiding Afghanistan, and Iran's policy has always been playing a part in reaching solutions for Afghanistan,' Mottaki said.
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said last week that it was expected that Iran would be invited to the conference.

Thru powers vested by the Citizens and Council of the American Republic, we now declare War against the Republic of Iran.
For making slanderous threats against the borders of the United States of America by President Ahmadinejad and his supporters, and the various Mullahs who hide behind the Koran like children. For making threats against the State of Israel and other countries that wish to live in peace. For instigating the elimination of Jews and others of various national and religious origin. For threatening to destroy by Nuclear force all countries that oppose its way. President Ahmadinejad wishes to fulfill a self proclaimed prophecy of stupidity. We will not allow this to happen. When the time is right, our forces will eviscerate and destroy all living things within Iran without mercy or compromise, leaving a country without people or things. The United States of America, the UN, Nato and others are weak and wish to allow this little man from Iran to shout threats with support from his Mullahs. We accept his threats and will act.
We are a Legion of many, who will live a life of peace, and have respect for all living things, while having considerations for those who are different, and look for ways to truly accommodate those who are slow in understanding.
We support the poor, helpless, and defenseless people. We support the freedom of Women, we support the sane treatment of animals and the environment, we support the freedom of religion and expression. We do not support ignorance, period.
We are a growing nation of people that encourage anyone or Nation anywhere to become part of the New American Republic!
Sincerely,
Judah Ben-Hur
