Sana'a, Yemen - Eight university students drowned during a swimming training exercise in the Red Sea port city of Houdieda in western Yemen on Sunday, the Interior Ministry reported.
The ministry said the mishap happened after a massive wave swept away 56 students from the physical education college of the Houdieda University as they were swimming off the shore in the vicinity of Kathib.
Thirteen other students suffered temporary deprivation of oxygen and were rushed to hospitals in Houdieda, some 220 kilometres west of the capital Sana'a, the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said the search-and-rescue operation would continue, as two students were still missing.
