Iran's Ahmadinejad cancels trip to three Latin American countries
May 4, 2009, 19:44 GMT
Tehran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has cancelled his trip to the three Latin American countries Brazil, Venezuela and Ecuador scheduled for later this week, official news agency IRNA reported Monday.
IRNA gave no reasons for the cancellation but just reported that instead, Ahmadinejad will leave on Tuesday to Syria and after that return to Iran and go to the Iranian province of Qazvin.
Observers believe that the timing of Ahmadinejad's trip to Latin America was not well programmed by the presidential office as on Tuesday, the registration for the June 12 presidential elections starts and the visit would have reduced time for the president to follow up his election campaign.
Earlier Monday, foreign ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi had confirmed the Latin American trip but refrained to give any further details on date.
