Iraqi Kurdish parliamentary elections scheduled for July
May 5, 2009, 16:12 GMT
Arbil, Iraq - Parliamentary elections for the semi- autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq are now scheduled to take place on July 25, the president of the region announced Tuesday.
'I hope that everyone will respect the diversity of political opinions... and that the people of Kurdistan will widely participate in the elections,' Kurdish President Massoud al-Barazani said in a speech before the Kurdish parliament in Arbil, some 350 kilometres north of Baghdad.
The region's 2.5 million eligible voters will choose from among 111 candidates representing some 42 political parties and movements, Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission said.
Parliamentary polls in the region were initially scheduled to be held on May 19, but were postponed because of a dispute over the law governing the elections.
