Bangladesh to reopen mission in Iraq
May 29, 2009, 14:21 GMT
Dhaka - Bangladesh on Friday announced that it would soon reopen its diplomatic mission in Iraq, provided the security situation improves further.
'We are actively considering a proposal to reopen our mission in Iraq soon. It is observed that the situation was gradually improving in the Middle East country,' Foreign Minister Dipu Moni told reporters.
She added that a Bangladeshi team was now in Iraq to assess the situation. Bangladesh needed the mission to seize the opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in reconstruction in Iraq, she said.
Several thousand Bangladeshi workers returned home after US-led allied forces invaded Iraq and launched a war to topple the Saddam Hussein in 2003. Dhaka shut down its mission in Baghdad at the time.
