Israeli court convicts former Arafat aide of arms trafficking
Jul 29, 2009, 11:19 GMT
Tel Aviv - An Israeli court on Wednesday convicted the former financial advisor to former Palestinian president Yassir Arafat of illegal arms dealing and of organizing and financing a weapons shipment.
The military court in the West Bank also found Fuad Shubaki guilty of bankrolling attacks against Israelis.
According to the court, Shubaki financed and coordinated the purchase of 50 tons of weapons loaded on board the Karine-A. Israeli commandos stormed the vessel in the Red Sea in January 2002.
During his trial, Shubaki, who was arrested by the Israelis in March 2006, maintained that he was only carrying out Arafat's orders.
He will be sentenced at a later date, Israel Radio said.
