Iranian reformist shifted from jail to house arrest, MP says
Jul 30, 2009, 20:48 GMT
Tehran - Iranian authorities on Thursday shifted the prominent reformist Saeed Hajjarian to a 'secure state-owned residential unit' from a jail, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported.
The transfer came one day after media reports said he would probably be released.
Hajjarian and dozens of other pro-reform activists were detained shortly after the June 12 disputed presidential election, which led to the re-election of the hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The judiciary said on Wednesday that Hajjarian would be released from the jail by the end of the day, but it did not happen.
'The Tehran prosecutor told me that Hajjarian was transferred today to a secure state-owned house ... his family can also visit him there,' said lawmaker Kazem Jalali.
Hajjarian's family and some reformist groups had expressed concern earlier this month about his critical health condition in prison. He survived an assassination attempt in 2000 and became disabled.
'Mr (Saeed) Mortazavi told me this house has suitable welfare and medical facilities that could be useful for Hajjarian's physical conditions,' Jalali added.
Authorities have released many of detainees, mainly demonstrators, but none of the prominent activists have been freed so far.
