Egyptian police find two tons of TNT near Gaza Strip
Sep 1, 2009, 12:34 GMT
Al-Arish, Egypt - Egyptian police seized two tons of explosives in an underground warehouse in the border town of Rafah, an Egyptian security official told the German Press Agency dpa on Tuesday.
Police discovered 23 large plastic bags full of TNT in the Sarsoureya neighbourhood in the divided town of Rafah, which is bisected by Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip, a source in Egypt's Interior Ministry said, requesting anonymity.
Police said the explosives were intended to be transported to Gaza via one of the many underground tunnels in Sarsoureya.
Police had not yet made arrests in connection with the find, the source added.
On Sunday, Egyptian police also seized half a ton of TNT in the same neighbourhood, the source said.
Egypt has been under consistent international pressure, particularly from the United States and Israel, to curtail weapons smuggling across its border with the Gaza Strip.
