Group calls for Iraq photographer held for year by US to be freed
Sep 2, 2009, 15:32 GMT
Paris - A photographer from the news agency Reuters has been now been held without charge for a year by the US military in Iraq, rights organization Reporters Without Borders (RWB) said Wednesday.
Ibrahim Jassam was detained on September 1, 2008 in the capital Baghdad, according to RWB, and has yet to be charged. Jassam is currently held at a jail in Basra, the group said.
The organisation said that he was 'being illegally held without charge' and called for him to be released immediately.
The US military has justified Jassam's arrest citing secret information from intelligence services. The military said the photographer was a danger to security and stability in Iraq. No more detailed information has been given.
RWB said they had already written several times to US General Raymond T. Odierno to complain about the case without receiving a reply.
