Iran welcomes US scrapping of missile defence plan
Sep 22, 2009, 6:10 GMT
Tehran - Iran welcomed the United States decision to scrap a planned missile defence system in Eastern Europe, Tehran media reported Tuesday.
While terming as 'absurd and baseless' any plan to counter a Iranian missile threat, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Ghashghavi said Iran welcomed any move which would decrease the global arms race.
The Iranian spokesman said the big issue was the competition between the US and Russia over influence in Eastern Europe, rather than countering Iran.
US President Barack Obama announced last Thursday that Washington was pulling out of the project as the US viewed short and medium-range missiles as a greater threat to its security compared to potential Iranian long-range missiles.
