Al-Qaeda group claims rocket fire on Israel from Lebanon

Beirut - A group linked to al-Qaeda claimed Thursday to have fired a Katusha rocket from southern Lebanon into northern Israel without causing any damage. The Brigades of Abdullah Azzam, Ziad Jarrah's Battalion, said it was responsible for Tuesday's attack, according to a statement released by a site close to al-Qaeda called al-Fajr. The group said it had prepared to launch five rockets but only fired one. It said the attack was in protest of a Sunday raid by Israeli police on Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque. 'The occupying Jews have repeatedly raided the courtyard of al- Aqsa Mosque. ... In response to this aggression ... the Battalion of Ziad Jarrah' fired the Katyusha, it said. Abdullah Azzam, mentor of al-Qaeda deputy chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, was killed in a 1989 bomb blast. Ziad Jarrah was one of the hijacking pilots in the September 11, 2001, suicide strikes against New York and Washington.
