Iran says foiled assassination plots against top official
Nov 2, 2009, 17:56 GMT
Tehran - Iranian intelligence said on Monday it arrested five people after foiling assassination plots against an unnamed senior official, state television reported.
The report said one of the assassination attempts was to have taken place in September when parliament met to approve the new government of re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The television, citing a statement by the Intelligence Ministry, said the second attempt was planned for the period leading up to anti-US rallies set for November 4.
Tehran has repeatedly accused foreign countries, particularly the United States and Britain, of backing terrorist activities in the Islamic state.
