Report: Iranian police ready again for hand amputation for thieves
Nov 9, 2009, 8:08 GMT
Tehran - Iranian police were ready once again to carry out hand amputations on thieves as a way to decrease crime, a Tehran newspaper reported Monday.
Hand amputation is part of the Islamic punishment for thieves with several convictions, but it has not been implemented in Iran in recent years.
A spokesman for the criminal investigation department said, however, that not implementing the amputation punishment has increased crime and insecurity in the country, the daily Ebtekar reported.
Implementing Islamic laws in Iran - such as hand amputations, stoning for adultery and executing minors - has in the past sparked international criticism.
The Iranian judiciary, therefore, has tried in recent years not to use the Islamic punishments, but still in some parts of the country, verdicts upon Islamic law are issued.
