France urges caution on Palestinian statehood declaration
Nov 16, 2009, 13:55 GMT
Paris - The French government Monday urged Palestinian authorities to be cautious in their proposed appeal to the United Nations Security Council to endorse a unilateral declaration of independence in the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War.
'A unilateral step could be damaging to the establishment of such a state,' a French foreign ministry spokesperson said during an electronic press conference.
France was currently engaged in 'deep reflections' with its EU partners and the United States about the issue, the spokesperson noted.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy is a strong supporter of a viable Palestinian state and the so-called two-state solution to the Mideast crisis.
