"Dozens" of casualties in twin Iraq bombings
Nov 25, 2009, 7:54 GMT
Baghdad - Dozens of people were killed and injured when two bombs exploded in the predominantly Shiite, central Iraqi city of Karbala on Wednesday, witnesses told the German Press Agency dpa.
Few details were immediately available, but witnesses said the first bomb destroyed a restaurant near a military base where soldiers often eat their breakfast.
Minutes later, a second bomb rigged to a bicycle exploded just outside the restaurant, witnesses said.
Police sealed off the area, and emergency workers arrived to take the injured to hospital.
Karbala, 118 kilometres south of Baghdad, is the site of important Shiite religious shrines.
