Renewed clashes in Iran at Montazeri mourning ceremony
Dec 23, 2009, 8:30 GMT
Tehran - There were renewed clashes on Wednesday between Iranian police and opposition supporters at a mourning ceremony for Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, opposition websites reported
After clashes in Qom on Monday during the funeral ceremony, police and opposition supporters clashed again before a mourning ceremony in Isfahan, central Iran, which is near Najafabad, the hometown of the ayatollah.
Several opposition supporters were injured and others arrested, according to unconfirmed website reports.
Montazeri died on Saturday night aged 87 in his sleep at his home in the religious city of Qom.
He had been banished from politics since the late revolutionary leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, dismissed him as his designated heir in March 1989 for criticizing the Islamic system.
Montazeri was a fierce critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and accused his government of dictatorship after his disputed re-election in June.
