At least three killed in incidents across Iraq
Dec 26, 2009, 10:00 GMT
Baghdad - Iraq witnessed several bombings in various Sunni areas Saturday, leaving at least three people dead and several others wounded, according to police reports.
A policeman was killed and several civilians wounded by a bombing in Tikrit, according to a police official in the area located some 140 kilometres from Baghdad.
The town is at the northern end of the so-called 'Sunni Triangle' in Iraq and has seen waves of heavy violence in the past.
Near Abu Ghreib, just west of the capital Baghdad, a tribal leader was killed by a roadside bomb placed outside his home, security officers said.
In the early morning, a man whose identity was unclear, was killed Saturday when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near his home in the centre of Falluja, police officials said.
Other blasts in Kirkuk and Baghdad, which apparently targeted police, injured several people, including civilians, but no deaths were reported.
Falluja, in Anbar province, is in the Sunni heartland of Iraq, to the west of the capital Baghdad.
The area, like other Sunni provinces, was formerly the site of some of the worst fighting between insurgents and US and Iraqi forces.
In a turn-around, the city has experienced relative calm since being run by former insurgents, known as the Awakening (Sahwa), who switched sides and allied themselves with with their former enemies.
