Iraqi speaker discusses poll arrangements for Iraqis in Jordan
Dec 30, 2009, 21:16 GMT
Amman - Iraqi parliament speaker Iyad Samerrai said Wednesday that he met with Jordanian Prime Minister Samir Rifai to discuss arrangements for enabling about 500,000 Iraqis living in Jordan to cast votes in Iraqi elections set for March 7.
'I discussed with the premier the facilities needed for Iraqis to cast their votes, the arrangements for the election campaigns and enabling Iraqis to meet with leaders of the political blocs,' Samerrai told a press conference at the end of a three-day visit to Jordan.
He said he had assured Rifai that all activities relating to the Iraqi election campaign in Jordan 'will take place in coordination with the concerned security authorities and in accordance with an understanding to be reached in this respect.'
Samerrai said the latest bombings in Iraq had the aim of 'influencing the outcome of the Iraqi elections, derailing the polling process or undermining the position of certain election coalitions.'
