Lebanon files complaint against Israel for torturing shepherd
Feb 2, 2010, 20:00 GMT
Beirut - Lebanon on Tuesday filed a complaint against Israel to the UN Security Council, protesting the kidnapping and torturing of a shepherd from southern Lebanon, a Lebanese Foreign Ministry source said.
Israel allegedly snatched Rabih Zahra from an area along the Lebanese border with Israel on Sunday.
According to the source, Zahra's arrest represents a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended Israel's 2006 war on Lebanon.
Zahra was handed over to UN peacekeepers on Monday, after hours of detention south of the Blue Line, which separates Israel from Lebanon.
A Lebanese army statement on Monday said: 'Zahra was badly beaten during his detention and the marks were clearly visible in his face and neck.'
A joint Lebanese army and UN team inspected the area from which Zahra was taken and announced he was arrested on Lebanese territory.
Zahra claimed that Israeli soldiers had beaten him and asked him about the activities of the Lebanese Shiite Movement, Hezbollah, in southern Lebanon.
Israeli media said Zahra was found to be carrying a weapon when he was detained.
