Iraqi militia leader's home bombed, three hurt
Feb 7, 2010, 10:56 GMT
Baghdad - A bomb exploded in the house of the leader of a government-allied militia leader in western Iraq Sunday, injuring three of his family members, police said.
Police told the German Press Angency dpa that militants had set off an explosion in the home of Abdel-Rizk Qalei, the leader of the local Sahwa, or 'Awakening,' militia in the town of Rawa, some 170 kilometres west of Baghdad.
One of Abdel-Rizk's three family members injured in the blast was in critical condition, they said.
Iraqi and US officials credit the Sahwa militias, composed in part of former insurgents, with helping to restore a measure of calm, particularly in predominantly Sunni areas to the west of the capital.
Insurgents frequently target the militiamen and others who work with the government in the region.
