Feb 24, 2010, 11:58 GMT
Falluja, Iraq - Iraqi security forces on Wednesday arrested 10 people suspected of plotting attacks near the western city of Falluja, the local police chief said.
The arrests follow a spate of violence in the area, Iraq's Sunni western heartland, in the weeks leading up to parliamentary elections scheduled for March 7.
'Military forces and Falluja police conducted a joint operation early this morning in search of wanted individuals in Amirayat al- Falluja, 20 kilometres south of Falluja,' Colonel Mohamed Fayyad, chief of Falluja's police force, told the German Press Agency dpa.
'They arrested 10 people suspected of belonging to armed groups planning to undermine efforts to restore security to the city,' he said.
Fayyad added that three of 'the most dangerous leaders of armed groups' were arrested Tuesday, but did not elaborate.
