Iran to test upgraded domestically produced bomb
Mar 1, 2010, 15:04 GMT
Tehran - Iran plans to test an upgraded version of its guided-bomb Qassed-1, the commander of the Iranian Air Force told the Fars news agency on Monday.
General Hassan Shahsafi said that plans are being made for a test of the Qassed-2, the successor to the 2,000-pound Qassed-1. It is supposed to have more accuracy and a longer range than the first model.
The Qassed-1 bomb was first test fired in 2006 and has since been mass-produced, the general added.
The Iranian navy last week presented its first domestically built warship, Jamaran, which is equipped with torpedoes and radar.
Iran has increased its local production of military logistics in light of renewed threats by Israel to attack the country's nuclear installations, which are located in the capital Tehran as well as in central and southern Iran.
Tehran says its military strength is for deterrence and self- defence only.
But the West fears that Iran could attack its archenemy Israel, especially since its Shahab-3 missiles, which are said to have a range of 2,000 kilometres, could reach any part of Israeli territory.
Tehran has not ruled out using the missiles against Israel, but said it would do so only in the case of Israeli airstrikes against its nuclear sites.
