Iraqi politician among nine injured in attack near Mosul (Extra)
Mar 7, 2010, 8:32 GMT
Baghdad - A member of the provincial government of northern Iraq's Nineveh province and eight of his companions were shot and injured Sunday as they approached a checkpoint near Mosul, police said.
Police told the German Press Agency dpa that gunmen opened fire at Qusai al-Shabaka's convoy as it approached a security checkpoint in al-Hamdaniya, roughly 30 kilometres east of the provincial capital, Mosul.
The attack came as millions of Iraqis went to the polls in Iraq's second parliamentary elections since the 2003 US-led invasion of the country.
The satellite news network al-Arabiya reported that five polling stations in the city, among Iraq's most dangerous, had been closed, though it did not specify why.
