Negotiators discuss Iran nuclear issue
Mar 25, 2010, 2:10 GMT
New York - Negotiators for the five United Nations Security Council permanent members plus Germany held teleconference calls on Wednesday on ways to stop Iran's advanced uranium enrichment scheme.
The political directors of the foreign ministries of the six countries 'agreed to engage in substantial discussion' in conversations from their respective capitals, said British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.
Grant said he had no immediate knowledge of the discussion, but a draft resolution would be produced once the negotiators have concluded the talks.
The five permanent members are divided on adding more sanctions against Iran for its defiance of UN demands to end uranium enrichment activities, which are suspected of being ultimately for the production of nuclear weapons. The United States, Britain and France favour new sanctions, while Russia and China oppose. Germany sides with the three Western governments.
