Egyptian security forces find large weapons cache
Apr 1, 2010, 12:46 GMT
Cairo - Egyptian security forces have discovered a large weapons cache in an underground storage area in the Sinai peninsula, security sources told the German Press Agency dpa on Thursday.
The sources said the cache was located in Nakhl, central Sinai, and included 100 anti-aircraft missiles, 45 improvised explosive devices, 35 RPG missiles and 50 Dana canons.
Security forces also discovered 13 underground tunnels running between Sinai and the Gaza Strip. Five of the tunnels were destroyed and eight were blocked.
Earlier this week, Egypt said it would maintain a partial blockade on the Gaza Strip until the militant Palestinian Hamas movement signs a reconciliation deal with its rival Fatah.
Israel and Egypt closed the Gaza Strip's borders after Hamas took control of the territory's security forces in 2007.
A lucrative trade in basic commodities, drugs and weapons has taken root along Gaza's border with Egypt, with smugglers tunnelling under border fortifications. Israeli warplanes have in recent weeks bombed the border area.
