US soldiers wounded in Afghanistan sent to Iraq for medical care
Apr 21, 2010, 10:04 GMT
Baghdad - The US is sending soldiers wounded in Afghanistan to Iraq for medical treatment, as the standard practice of flying them to Germany has been impeded by a volcanic ash cloud over Europe, the Peyamner News Agency reported Wednesday.
Stephen Alfred, spokesperson for the US Air Force in Iraq, said 'the wounded cannot be taken to the usual destination in Germany because of the disruptions in air travel.'
'The first group of wounded soldiers arrived in Iraq three days ago. There are around 20 of them,' he said.
The soldiers are being treated at the US military hospital in the area of Balad, where US forces operate an airbase. Alfred said the hospital was able to provide a high standard of care for most cases before their transferral back to the US.
