May 23, 2010, 7:15 GMT
Beirut- Voters headed to the polls in southern Lebanon to elect municipal councils and mayors Sunday, as Israeli military drills were being conducted on the other side of the border.
The polls opened at 7 am (0500GMT) and will close at 7pm.
Hezbollah is expected to sweep the votes in many areas.
Israel is carrying out military drills to prepare emergency responses to cross-border rocket strikes from Lebanese militants.
Lebanon has holding municipal elections throughout the country since May 2.
The main contest Sunday will be in the port city of Sidon, between supporters of Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the Hezbollah.
Troops were deployed to the area to prevent electoral violence.
