Dubai allocates 136 million dollars for more security cameras

Jun 20, 2010, 13:57 GMT

Dubai - Dubai has allocated 500 million dirham (around 136 million dollars) to add more security cameras in the Gulf emirate, a local newspaper reported Sunday.

Dubai Police chief Dahi Khalfan told The National daily newspaper that a new type of smart camera that can rotate to cover what were once 'dead spots' will be installed.

'We will have cameras everywhere,' he said, adding that there are currently 25,000 security cameras in Dubai.

Dubai police used closed circuit TV footage to identify suspects in the murder of top Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, who was found suffocated in his Dubai hotel room in January.

Those details created diplomatic fallout worldwide after Dubai said that the suspects were Mossad agents from Israel who used counterfeit European passports to enter and leave Dubai.

'With the al-Mabhouh murder, we were able to play back time through the footage captured by cameras, and after going through 1,700 hours of CCTV (closed circuit television) footage we were able to pull the strings together and identify the suspects,' said Khalfan.
