Egyptian police destroy three tunnels along Gaza border
Jul 23, 2010, 9:30 GMT
Rafah, Egypt - Egyptian police destroyed three smuggling tunnels along the border with the Gaza Strip, seizing goods but making no arrests, an Egyptian security source said Friday.
One tunnel used to smuggle cars was discovered early Friday in the Al-Ahrash area of the border town of Rafah. The other two, discovered late Thursday in the Salaheddin neighbourhood, were used to smuggle food and medical goods.
Police found some goods inside plastic bags, but no one was arrested.
Palestinians have dug thousands of tunnels to smuggle goods and fuel from Egypt to the Gaza Strip after Israel imposed a blockade on the impoverished enclave around four years ago.
Last month, Israel eased the blockade.
Both Egypt and Israel have destroyed hundreds of tunnels over the past three years.
In recent months, Egypt has been criticized for an underground barrier it erected under international pressure to curtail weapons smuggling through the tunnels.
