Jordanian king in Cairo for Mideast talks (Roundup)
Aug 12, 2010, 14:58 GMT
Amman - Jordan's King Abdullah II met Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak briefly Thursday in Cairo, government officials said, without elaborating further.
The king had left Amman for the Egyptian capital earlier in the day. Jordanian officials said the talks were meant to focus on the stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was also in Cairo for talks with Mubarak. Officials said the Palestinian leader might meet Abdullah separately for a face-to-face discussion.
The Arab League recently approved a move to direct talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, but left the timing up to Abbas. He has so far attached conditions to the move, including a freeze on Israeli settlement construction.
Diplomats said the Arab leaders' talks would focus on possible ways of moving to direct negotiations with the Israelis.
