Hezbollah hands over alleged evidence to UN tribunal

Aug 17, 2010, 14:56 GMT

Beirut - Hezbollah has handed over to international prosecutors what it says is evidence of an Israeli involvement in the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, local media reported Tuesday.

The information had been requested by the United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon, which is investigating the death of the late Lebanese leader.

Last week, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah showed off video footage of Israeli drones monitoring the site of the murder and the confession of an alleged spy, evidence he said that Israel was implicated.

There is growing speculation that UN chief prosecutor Daniel Bellemare is about to indict several members of Hezbollah, including key officials.

Nasrallah insists his organization had nothing to do with the Hariri murder.

Hariri was killed in a massive bomb blast in 2005 in a seaside area of Beirut along with 20 other people. His supporters at the time accused Syria of being behind his killing, a charge Damascus has denied.
