Turkey seeks better protection for embassy in Israel
Aug 18, 2010, 12:45 GMT
Ankara - Turkey has asked Israel to provide more protection for its embassy in Tel Aviv, Turkish media reported Wednesday, a day after a Palestinian barricaded himself inside the building.
Ankara was surprised how easy it was for the man to get into the premises, a foreign ministry official was quoted as saying.
The man threatened staff with a toy gun and knife in a bid to obtain political asylum, before he was overpowered by embassy security personnel.
The 32-year-old Palestinian was slightly injured in Tuesday evening's incident and needed hospital treatment.
Israeli radio said the man was a former Israeli collaborator who had a history of mental health problems.
Relations between Turkey and Israel have been strained since the 2008-09 Gaza war and deteriorated further this year following an Israeli military raid on a Turkish aid ship that left nine dead.
