Sep 6, 2010, 10:21 GMT
Hilla, Iraq - Two young brothers were killed in a landmine explosion in southern Iraq on Monday, in what police said appeared to be an accident.
The incident, which took place in Hilla, some 100 kilometres south of the capital Baghdad.
The boys, aged 12 and 17, had stumbled over a mined area that most likely dated back to the regime of former president Saddam Hussein, police told the German Press Agency dpa.
Iraq joined the Ottawa Treaty, better known the Mine Ban Treaty, in August 2007. The international agreement, signed by 156 states, stipulates that countries cannot use, make or stockpile land mines and must clear their territories of the explosives within 10 years.
