Egypt destroys 15 Gaza smuggling tunnels
Sep 21, 2010, 13:10 GMT
El Arish, Egypt - Egyptian security forces on Tuesday destroyed 15 tunnels used to smuggle cars, petrol and other goods into the Gaza Strip, a security source said.
After destroying the tunnels, officials discovered 12 more running across various points along Egypt's 11-kilometre-long border with Gaza, the source said.
The source said that Egyptian authorities confirmed with officials on the Gaza side of the border that no people were underground before demolishing the tunnels.
The move came less than two weeks after Egyptian authorities demolished five smuggling tunnels.
A blockade on the Gaza Strip was tightened after the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas took control of the territory in 2007.
In addition to being used to move essential goods from Egypt into Gaza, the tunnels are also believed to be used in the smuggle weapons of weapons into the enclave.
