Sudanese killed trying to cross from Egypt to Israel
Oct 30, 2010, 14:04 GMT
Al-Arish, Egypt - Egyptian police shot dead one Sudanese and injured two others attempting to cross the border into Israel on Saturday, an Egyptian security source said.
Seven others fled across the Sinai border and made their way to Israel as police traded gunfire with a group of people-traffickers, who escaped, the source added.
Large numbers of migrants use Egypt as a transit point in their search for jobs and asylum in other countries.
According to the United Nations, there are more than 15,000 Sudanese refugees in Egypt, many from the violence-plagued Darfur region.
At least 65 African migrants, 55 of them Sudanese, were arrested during the week en route to Israel.
Egypt has been criticized by human rights organisations for frequently shooting and killing migrants in order to prevent them from crossing the 255 kilometre-long border.
