Egypt rejects comparisons between Tunisia and other Arab countries
Jan 18, 2011, 14:25 GMT
Cairo - The Egyptian government on Tuesday rejected claims that the recent upheaval in Tunisia resulting in the ousting of President Zidane el-Abidine ben Ali would carry over into other countries.
'We do not believe that what took place in Tunisia could be easily repeated in any other country,' Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hossam Zaky said in a press statement.
'It is difficult to compare the situation in Tunisia, which led to the popular movement there, with the situation in any other country,' he said.
Egyptian and international media have speculated about whether the upheaval in Tunisia would trigger a 'domino effect,' inspiring movements against ruling regimes in other Arab countries.
Last week, the Egyptian government called on Tunisians to unite in order to 'maintain their gains' after Ben Ali left the country.
