Blair has "deep and profound regret" for Iraq war victims (Extra)
Jan 21, 2011, 14:53 GMT
London - Former British prime minister Tony Blair Friday expressed his 'deep and profound' regret for the loss of life among soldiers and civilians during the six-year Iraq conflict.
His statement came at the end of Blair's four-and-a-half hour testimony to Britain's Iraq Inquiry, which is investigating the events and decisions that led to the 2003 invasion and the toppling of Saddam Hussein.
'I wanted to make it clear that, of course, I regret deeply and profoundly the loss of life, whether from our own armed forces, those of other nations, the civilians who helped people in Iraq or the Iraqis themselves.'
Relatives of the 179 British soldiers who died in Iraq had repeatedly demanded an 'apology' from Blair.
