Palestinians ask Quartet to recognize Palestinian state
Feb 2, 2011, 14:10 GMT
Ramallah - Palestinian officials Wednesday called on the Middle East Quartet - the United States, Russia, United Nations and European Union - to recognize the 1967 borders of the future Palestinian state.
Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan and the Gaza Strip from Egypt in the Six-Day War of that year.
The Quartet has 'an historic opportunity' to recognize the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Voice of Palestine Radio.
He said that unless the Quartet, scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the Munich Security Germany on Saturday, took this position and condemned Israeli settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, 'the region will see more turmoil, chaos and bloodshed.'
