Report: Obama to appoint top adviser to Israel post
Feb 22, 2011, 21:41 GMT
Washington - US President Barack Obama intends to nominate a senior White House adviser as the next ambassador to Israel, a US political journal reported Tuesday.
Politico reported online that Obama will shortly appoint Dan Shapiro, the White House National Security Council's senior director for the Middle East. If confirmed by the Senate, Shapiro would replace James Cunningham, who has served as ambassador since June 2008.
Shapiro is fluent in Hebrew and has strong ties to the US Jewish community and was involved with Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, Politico said.
Shapiro has worked closely with other top US officials, including Middle East envoy George Mitchell, who has spearheaded efforts to move forward with Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.
