Israel: no invite yet to proposed Mideast Quartet meeting
Feb 25, 2011, 12:48 GMT
Jerusalem - Israel had not yet received an invitation to attend a meeting in Brussels with the Middle East Quartet mediators to discuss the core issues of the conflict with the Palestinians, a Foreign Ministry spokesman told the German Press Agency dpa Friday.
The comment came after UN Middle East coordinator Robert Serry said late Thursday that the Quartet intends to hold separate meetings next week with Israelis and Palestinians to discuss the key issues in an attempt to revive stalled Middle East peace talks.
The Quartet is made up of the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.
Another Foreign Ministry official was quoted on Israel Radio as saying that if there was in fact an attempt underway to get peace talks going again, it was a 'desirable move.'
Serry told reporters in New York Thursday that the Quartet's separate meetings with Israelis and Palestinians would precede a meeting of the Quartet in March.
The core issues of the Israeli Palestinian conflict - often regarded as potential deal-breakers - include the borders of a future Palestinian state, Israeli security arrangements, the status of Jerusalem and its holy sites, and the fate of Palestinian refugees from the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli war and their descendants.
