Shooting of civilians "unacceptable," EU's Ashton tells Syria

Brussels - The European Union's top foreign policy official on Tuesday called on Syria to stop a violent crackdown on anti-government uprising, stressing that using live ammunition against protesters is 'unacceptable.'
In a statement, High Representative Catherine Ashton said the EU 'strongly condemns the violent repression, including through the use of live ammunition ... resulting in the death of several demonstrators, wounded persons and arbitrary detentions, which is unacceptable.'
Syrian authorities were urged 'to refrain from using violence and to listen to the legitimate aspirations of the people and address them through inclusive political dialogue and genuine reforms and not through repression.'
Ashton also called for those responsible for shooting demonstrators in the southern city of Daraa to be brought to justice.
