Turkey backs Syria reform efforts
Apr 6, 2011, 13:03 GMT
Damascus/Cairo - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday said his country backed the Syrian government's efforts to introduce political reforms.
Davutoglu met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Wednesday, following visits to Qatar and Bahrain.
Davutoglu expressed his country's support for the reform package adopted by the Syrian authorities,' the official SANA news agency reported, citing a statement from the Syrian presidency.
The foreign minister also said that Turkey was ready to help accelerate the reforms process 'in order to ensure the prosperity of the Syrian people and reinforce their security and stability.'
Al-Assad said he wanted to 'profit from the experience of certain countries, particularly Turkey, for drafting legislation relating to reforms.'
Earlier this week, al-Assad tasked former agriculture minister Adel Safar with forming a new cabinet, following weeks of anti- government protests calling for reform and, in some instances, for the president to step down.
