Royal wedding prompts Israeli to request king-size name change
May 23, 2011, 10:01 GMT
Tel Aviv - An Israeli man was so excited by the wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton that he decided to take the phrase 'the royal we' literally, and requested to change his name to those of 10 British kings and princes he especially admired.
His request - to be named Henry William Philip Charles Frederick Michael Louis George Edward Robert - was refused by the Population and Immigration Authority, on the grounds of misleading the public, the Yediot Ahronot daily reported Monday.
Since Israel law mandates only up to three names on an identity card, the unnamed applicant was asked to choose the three he wanted the most.
The report quoted a Population and Immigration Authority official as saying that 'thousands of people change their names every year in Israel, some at the advice of a rabbi, others at the advice of mystics, along with people who want to Hebraize their name. But we have never encountered such a strange request.'
The daily did not say which three royal names the applicant finally chose.
