EU to hit Syria with fresh sanctions next week, diplomats say
Jun 17, 2011, 13:54 GMT
Brussels - Syria is to be hit with a fresh round of European Union sanctions next week, a senior diplomat from the bloc said on Friday.
'New sanctions will be announced by the European Council,' the diplomat said, referring to the EU summit scheduled in Brussels on June 23-24.
Another diplomat said an extension of the Syrian sanctions was on the agenda of the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.
A third source said that the new measures may target 'entities' such as firms seen as supporting the regime of President Bashir al-Assad.
The EU has already frozen the assets and slapped a travel ban on 23 Syrian officials, including Assad, following the bloody repression of popular protests which started in March.
According to Syrian rights groups, 1,300 civilians and more than 300 soldiers and police have been killed in the repression.
